Please go here and check out a new zine! The wonderful and oh so talented, Sherry, has put together a zine about being your own superhero, all designed to raise money for a cure to breast cancer. I lost my mom to this disease nearly 5 years ago. She died with dignity and grace; she never gave up her fight. The disease took a horrible toll, and the memories that live in my mind are not the ones of her final days, although those days are still so very vivid.
Sherry's request for me to create something for her zine honored me. You see, she's one amazing woman herself. Even if I hadn't lost mom to breast cancer, I would have yelled a resounding "Yes!!!"
My page just flowed out of me; I think mom must have been smiling down on me.
Dad affectionately called her his hardheaded Russian, and that same Russian blood flows through me. Mom gave me the grit and determination to put one foot in front of the other, even when things get bad beyond belief. There a stubborness that simply won't let me quit, no matter how many balls I'm juggling.
Yes, I cry. Yes, I whine. There are times when I crawl under the covers and just want to stay there. But one tiny niggling part of my brain insists that I quit the nonsense and get my act in gear.
So, what's a superhero? To me, it's someone who does his or her best to get things done; someone who just keeps going through life's everyday roadblocks and obstacles. I firmly believer most women are superheros to those they love and who love them right back. There's a strong core of strength inside each of us. This I know to be true.
Please hop on over to Sherry's blog and get yourself one cool zine. Sherry thanks you. I thank you. Most of all, my mom thanks you for herself and for all the women who have battled and who will battle this disease.
This one's for you, Mom!
